Xerostomia is one of the most common adverse effects of radiation therapy for head and neck cancer (HNC). Normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models can be used to predict the occurrence probability of xerostomia from the dose-volume histogram. However, applying an NTCP model to a different patient cohort requires independent validation specific to that cohort. In this study, we used retrospective data from 100 HNC patients to externally validate and improve an NTCP model for predicting grade 2 xerostomia at 6 months post-irradiation of HNC patients treated with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) at Chulabhorn Hospital.
